Defending against multiple catapult waves

How to split multiple catapult waves

In the basic sense, Travian works using the “First In, First Out” principle.  That means actions that are scheduled to happen in the same second will happen in the order in which they are scheduled.

So, let’s say that we have 6 waves of catapults arriving as follows:

12:00:00
12:00:00
12:00:00
12:00:01
12:00:01
12:00:01

Most attacking players will place their “clear,” or the biggest part of their hammer, in that first wave, in hopes of clearing out any stacked defense and allowing the rest of their catapult waves to hit a village empty of defenders.

As a defender, if you know that you won’t be able to stack a big enough defense to kill the hammer with minimal losses in time, then a popular strategy is to allow the clear and first two waves to hit, and then defend with a fairly small number of defenders against the remaining three catapult waves. This usually works since most players will send only a minimal escort with their catapults, making them fairly easy to kill, thus reducing the damage that village will take.

So, how does one “split” the catapult waves listed above?  The key here is to remember how the order of events plays out when the events are scheduled to occur within the same second.  If we look at the attack times, and call for reinforcements to land at 12:00:01, this is what will happen:

12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:01 catapults hit
12:00:01 catapults hit
12:00:01 catapults hit
12:00:01 reinforcements arrive

The catapults were already on the way; they were sent first, so they will arrive first.  When we called for reinforcements, they were sent *after* the catapults were, so they will arrive *after* the catapults hit.  In order to “split” these catapult waves, we must request defense to arrive at 12:00:00, and then this is what will occur:

12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:00 catapults hit
12:00:00 reinforcements arrive
12:00:01 catapults arrive (and probably die without causing damage)
12:00:01 catapults arrive (and probably die without causing damage)
12:00:01 catapults arrive (and probably die without causing damage)

So the key thing to remember about defending/”splitting” multiple catapult waves is that your defenders must arrive in the second *before* the waves you want to defend against hit your village.
